Southern Italy Masterpiece: 8 Days of History, Trulli, and Baroque Charm

Discover the unique blend of Byzantine history, unique architecture, and vibrant gastronomy across Puglia (Apulia) and Basilicata.

Day 1: Imperial Geometry and Romanesque Elegance

Your journey begins with a transfer to Castel del Monte, the grandiose 13th-century castle built by Frederick II of Swabia. Marvel at its striking, perfect octagonal geometry (8 towers, 8 rooms per floor). Continue to Trani to admire its elegant, isolated Romanesque Cathedral, a masterpiece of Apulian architecture.

Day 2: Matera: The City of Stones (Sassi)

Explore Matera, a visually stunning town where most houses are carved into the rock face of a deep ravine. Visit one of the ancient cave churches (chiese rupestri), such as Santa Maria d'Idris, and connect with centuries of history embedded in the stone.

Day 3: Trulli, Wine, and Olive Oil

Head into the Terra dei Trulli. Visit Alberobello, the main site for these unique, whitewashed houses with conical grey stone roofs. Continue to Locorotondo, known for its circular historic center and surrounding urban vineyards. Enjoy a unique wine tour and olive oil making experience, tasting exquisite DOC and IGT wines like Negroamaro, Aleatico, and Primitivo, alongside top-quality extra virgin olive oil.

Day 4: The White City and Baroque Splendor

Explore Ostuni, the stunning "White City," which evokes a Greek atmosphere with its historic, whitewashed center. Then, delve into Lecce, the 'Florence of the South,' famed for its exuberant Baroque architecture. Admire the cathedral and other monuments masterfully sculpted from the soft local stone by artists like Giuseppe Zimbalo.

Day 5: Otranto: Italy’s Eastern Edge

Transfer to Otranto, a town dominated by the Aragonese castle on the Salentine Peninsula. Inside the walled old town, visit the Cathedral, whose magnificent 12th-century mosaic floor, created by a Byzantine monk, stands out for its bright colors and rich symbolism—a breathtaking sight.

Day 6: Gothic Frescoes and Byzantine Influence

Journey to Galatina to visit the Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria. This large Gothic basilica is almost entirely covered with impressive, brightly colored frescoes depicting scenes from the Apocalypse, Genesis, and the life of Christ, a style unusually reminiscent of the frescoes found in Assisi.
